Diachronic linguistics is the study of the ways in which language changes over time. Sometimes conflated with historical linguistics (which is concerned with the specific synchronic changes in the development of specific languages), diachronic linguistics is uniquely concerned with the mechanisms and underlying processes that allow for language to change over time.
